Bachiller Drives Battery Recycling with Its Vacuum Drying Technology

Battery Recycling with Vacuum Drying Technology

In a context driven by the exponential growth of electric vehicles and the transition towards a more sustainable economy, battery recycling has become one of the key challenges for the industry. At Bachiller, we have spent years developing advanced technological solutions designed to support this process in an efficient, safe, and sustainable way.

Our range of vacuum dryers has proven to be an optimal solution for processing materials generated during battery recycling operations, particularly in critical stages where solvents, moisture, and volatile compounds must be removed under controlled conditions. Thanks to vacuum technology, these drying processes can be carried out safely while allowing the precise separation of solids and solvents for reuse, improving overall process efficiency.

Bachiller has gained solid experience in this sector through the extensive testing activities carried out at our Test Center. Over the years, we have successfully worked on several key applications related to battery recycling, validating our technology under real operating conditions.

One of the most relevant applications has been the recycling of black mass, a complex material recovered from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries consisting of a concentrated mixture of metal compounds — mainly oxides — containing lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, together with graphite and other residual cell components. Our vacuum drying technology has demonstrated excellent performance in the safe and efficient treatment of these sensitive materials.

We have also conducted trials focused on the recycling of NMC cathode production scrap, helping manufacturers recover valuable raw materials generated during battery manufacturing processes.

In addition, Bachiller has participated in projects involving the recycling of pre-shredded batteries, where the treatment of heterogeneous and potentially hazardous materials requires robust, reliable, and highly controlled process solutions.

The trials carried out at our Test Center have confirmed the effectiveness of our vacuum drying systems in the treatment of complex materials generated from battery recycling operations. The results obtained demonstrate not only high process efficiency, but also safe operation and excellent adaptability to the demanding requirements of this industry.

Beyond process performance, vacuum drying technology also plays an important role in sustainability. By improving solvent recovery, minimizing emissions, and facilitating the recovery of valuable materials, vacuum dryers contribute directly to reducing the environmental impact of battery recycling operations. This fully aligns with the growing global demand for cleaner and more circular industrial processes.

At Bachiller, we are proud to contribute to the development of more sustainable industrial solutions and to support our customers in optimizing their recycling processes through innovative and reliable technologies.

We have incorporated a new vacuum dryer into our Test Center

Horizontal vacuum paddle dryer and reactor

At Bachiller, we are finalizing the manufacturing of the new TURBODRY MHT‑200RS vacuum dryer, which will soon be installed at our Test Center in Parets del Vallès, Barcelona.

This horizontal paddle reactor-dryer is designed for demanding vacuum drying and reaction processes, especially with pseudo-plastic products and high-viscosity materials.

Its construction features a fully heated body, shaft, and paddles, ensuring optimal heat transfer and precise thermal control, even under complex processing conditions.

The unit can be configured with two paddle types, depending on the application:

  • Ploughshare paddles, for intensive mixing with high shear and turbulence.
  • Flat paddles, ideal for gentle mixing where product morphology must be preserved.

📌 Key specifications:

  • Useful volume: 147 L
  • Material: AISI 904L
  • Operating pressure: -1 / +15 bar(g)
  • Operating temperature: up to 220 °C
  • Design code: ASME VIII Div. 1
  • ATEX classification: Internal Zone 0/20 – External Zone 1/21

Want to see it in action? We’ll be showcasing it at POWTECH 2025, from September 23 to 25 at Messe Frankfurt, with live demos and our team available to answer all your questions.

Set of two vertical vacuum dryers for a British company

We start the year with great enthusiasm and dedication to our work!

We have just delivered a set of two vertical vacuum dryers Supradry SDV-010 of 1,000 liters in AISI-304-L stainless steel to a large British company with more than 100 years of history dedicated to the chemical sector.

In this project, our client required dryers that were very careful with their product, which in this case were polymers, and that were able to reduce the humidity of this from 0.2% to 0.01%.

To achieve a reliable industrial process, we previously tested the process in our Test Center. Once the necessary adjustments were made and the desired results were obtained, we scaled the equipment to achieve the performance required by our client.
